Less of You
Peter's Comments:
My first song in forever! Good to know I can still produce something vaguely artistic.
This one was going to be a totally different song until I decided, "I need to write something in minor." The chord progression is dead simple, but I simply have never written something in minor, so there was much scratching-of-head while I puzzled out things like, "No, the V chord really is a B7."
My main regret is that it bears a nearly-plagiaristic similarity to "I Thought I Knew You" by Matthew Sweet. This occurred to me right as I was about to record it, and I figured it was too late to turn back. Besides, it's got a different melody and a different harmonic structure. Um... yeah.
Loved playing the silly faux-Spanish solos. Tried to take the last high note up a third to a G above middle C. Bad idea.
The Reviews
I actually finished this in time for the
SongFight deadline, so there are reviews. A few people liked it, a few people strongly disliked it, and lots of indifference in between....
I agree that the solos are aimless and more for my own amusement than the song... and yep, I felt a lot of trepidation about the last E when I broke on a G three or four times in a row. Yeah, the vocals are a bit low; not sure how to fix the guitar's phasing/sound problems; in a perfect world, I would have added some new element to make things more interesting from 2:30 on.
Fried Nice, very nice. It is amazing what you have done with an acoustic guitar and voice. 9/10
yth 3m04s (full-length), almost lost me at 2m24s, but i remained faithful
Josh Woodward Hujhax (7 [production
, 7 [performance
, 8 [song quality
) There's some strange phasing on the guitar that makes my brain hurt. This is a neat tune. The phase treatment of the acoustic is very distracting, it's throwing my ear balance off. The arrangement is otherwise clean and effective. Nice solo. Neat ending. Good job!
bolio Not a boy & guitar fan. Decent vocal holds it together pretty well, but just isn't my style. Guitar solo is too long for what it is (keep the 2nd half.) And the solo on the outro is overkill, sounds too much like the first one.
Blind Mime I like the chords here. The guitar could use more room sound but the performance is excellent and pulling me in. The solo part is really great and pushed it even further and the vocal after that keeps it going too. Sounded like maybe you were afraid of that last note just a bit. Do another few takes 'cos you did hit it -- just a little hesitant. Excellent!
Leaf 62 Production wise, your guitar sounds a tensy bit brittle. Is it compressed? Perhaps a touch too much? Perhaps I'm full of it? Vocals sound distant. I like the psuedo-spainish feel you got going on. The melody line is nice, but it's overshadowed by the chording. Look out Sting. I like it. I'm not calling it a contender, simply because, I'm not a 100% convinced. good effort though.
C. Layne i'm really digging this when you're not singing. it's not the your voice is bad by any stretch. just... generic, i think. pretty song, though. nice latin feel. production is pretty good, though not excellent. i can't really think of what to do to make it any better, because i'm still figuring those things out myself. good song, though.
Joshy Blue guitar all right doesnt work for me with nothing on the left - too distracting. the sound of the guitar itself is pretty nice and warm.
WreckDom Finally something a bit jaded. That's what I felt like when I was considering this title. Good job for what it is. Not necessarily entertaining all the time, but it?s got its place.
user Nice use of egg shaker. I like the dark, Spanish-soundig guitar. Do I hear aahs in the background? Turn that up, whatever that is. Good job.
Jim of Seattle You didn't spend enough time getting your vocals down right. Your vocals are one of the things I look forward to in your song. This isn't bad, but I don't love it. I think that almost Spanish strummy guitar isn't the right choice for this song. It's pretty, though, and some backing tracks would help a lot.
