Peter's Comments:
A quick test of FruityLoops. I used FL Studio to generate the drums on this track, and then quickly threw some bland bass + guitars on top. Results: unsatisfying, but the drums sound more or less okay.

I need to figure out how to convince FL to make the drums a little less painfully mechnical, and I need to convince my lazy sense of rhythm to actually play instruments in sync to the drums. Still, FL is set up a lot better than my usual MIDI editor for quickly throwing together drum tracks. I may start in FL, export it to a MIDI editor, and finally move that to ntrack. We'll see.

I'm using a new StudioProjects C1 condenser mic, but I can't get the damn thing to work right. I always have to crank up the gain, and it becomes noisy as hell. Might just end up being a waste of $200. (!)

Anyway, I hadn't written anything in forever, and I hadn't mixed anything on my shiny new monitors, so I felt like I had to write something... anything... even if it was just one minute of blandness.
