Peter's Song of the Week Club!
3/3/04
Lizard Wizard (Potluck #2)
Peter's Comments:
After nearly singlehandedly killing the first Potluck, Jim invited me back to write the tune for Round 2. I was given a batch of lyrics and 24 hours in which to set them.
For those curious, my setting is
here. You'll note that I managed to write a vocal line that spans two octaves -- I was singing in a choral performance of Mendelssohn's Elijah, and without thinking about it, aped the way that oratorio sets the word 'whirlwind' on a rapidly-ascending melodic line. The result, in this case, was something that was almost unsingable.
Roy Castle, who was handling the singing/mixing end of things, brought it to completion. The
final result was different, less range-y, more Bowie-like, and much, much better, all while keeping (IMHO) the feel of the original. (Roy Castle = talented dude.)
The song was well-received by the
SongFight community, and still stands in my estimation as 'pretty damn good.'
