Peter's Comments:
I suppose I'm just a contrarian. Having heard a few folk songs along the lines of "I was in trouble, real trouble, before [my new boyfriend? came along and made everything all right," I felt like singing the exact opposite. Tough going until I decided (arbitrarily) on 3/4, and hit upon the ersatz-sea-shanty genre that would let me get some narrative in and (more importantly) not take it so bloody seriously.

Lessons learned:

  1. Almost nothing rhymes with 'gunwale.'
  2. Piccolos are fun.
  3. In English, there are surprisingly few one-syllable profession names.

Ah. It feels nice to have written something that is quite possibly a children's song. A refreshing break from my usual wallowy emo quagmire. Huzzah!
