Closed Position and Charleston
Swingout from Closed
- 1, 2: A slightly-larger rock-step than usual
3 & 4: On your triple-step, you get planted in a faceoff position.
- More specifically, the lead plants herself in front of you, and pulls you forward.
- 5-8: These steps are the same as the open basic.
Circle to Closed
- Start in open position.
- 1-4: As normal except the lead waits for you to approach and then catches you in a 'V' position -- that is, you are shoulder to shoulder, and your bodies are at an acute angle instead of facing off.
5-8: Continue in a clockwise circle 1

- Cross in front -- right foot in front of left foot -- as you go.
Charleston
- On some rock step, the lead will let you angle back into a side-by-side position.
- Your left hand is on the lead's right shoulder.
- The lead's right hand is against your midsection
- The footwork is the same as the lead's, only mirrored.
- Can escape in a move similar to swingout from closed.
Face-to-Face Charleston (!)
- 1, 2: Rock-step as usual
- 3 & 4: You get planted in a faceoff position
- 5, 6: Left foot taps behind and returns
- 7, 8: Left foot goes forward and plants
- 1, 2: Right foot taps forward and returns
- 3, 4: Right foot goes backward and plants
- Loop the above 8-count an arbitrary number of times, until....
- 7 & 8: Left foot plants as you yourself are planted back into a closed position.
- Then, you can do a swingout from closed or something.
