20's Charleston
Balboa & 20's Charleston: Some Differences
| Balboa | 20's Charleston | Slight bounce | Very large bounce | Shuffle along the floor | Up & down off the floor | Small, energy-conserving motion | Big, flashy motion | Lots of rotation & lateral motion | Added to that: lots of twisty motion | Relative paucity of jazz hands | Jazz hands keenly encouraged
The Basic
- 1: Touch left foot back.
2: Bring left foot forward.
- It should trace a 'C' along the floor as it goes.
- 3: Step left foot forward.
4: Hold.
- (Start lifting right foot.)
- 5: Touch right foot forward.
6: Bring right foot back.
- It should trace a 'C' along the floor as it goes.
- 7: Step right foot back.
8: Hold.
- (Start lifting left foot.)
- The stance is still upright.
The Repeater
- On 3, put all of your weight firmly on the left foot.
- Then, on 7, merely touch the right foot behind you, without putting weight on it.
- You can repeat this pattern of bringing the right foot forward and back an arbitrary number of times.
- To escape, just plant the right foot behind you, as normal.
Note that you can do the mirror image of the above.
- You would start by planting all your weight firmly on your right foot on 7.
A Basic Turn
- Same as the basic, except for....
- 1: Bring your left hand towards your left hip.
- 3: Start turning the follow clockwise in place.
- 5: Start catching the follow's back.
- 7: Bring the follow in.
A Blocked Turn
- Same as the basic turn, except for....
5: Catch the follow's right elbow in your right hand.
- Note that your right hand just left the follow's back a split-second ago.
- 7: Bring follow in as before.
Wax On/Wax Off/Sweep the Leg
1,2: Lunge left.
- For style, prepare this by raising the left-hand connection and circling it clockwise in a 'wax-the-car' motion.
3,4: Lunge right.
- For style, prepare this by taking the left-hand connection and circling it counterclockwise in a 'wax-the-car' motion.
- You can repeat this an arbitrary number of times.
- Note that before you return from these lunges, you should stand upright in a proper balboa hold.
