Things to See and Do in Austin
So you're coming to visit! Here's a list of interesting goings-on about town.
Theatre & Film
- Saturday nights, I'm usually doing
Micetro at
The Hideout
No Shame Theatre -- Cool DIY-performance-art show that happens every other Friday at the Hideout.
Mister Sinus -- Mystery Science Theatre 3000, only done live, with three talented comedians and delightfully bad movies like The Karate Kid.- It's always good to see what's going on at the
Alamo Drafthouse when you're in town. - People who want a more traditional GigantoPlex should check out the
Gateway Cinemas.
Museums & Historical Sites
- The
State Capitol -- tours daily. - The
Blanton Art Musum -- UT's art museum. - The
Austin Art Museum -- the art museum downtown. - The
Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum
The Outdoors
- You really owe it to yourself to see the nightly
bat emergence -- every night, 1.5 million bats fly out from the Congress Avenue Bridge. - The
Umlauf Sculpture Garden -- a nice little park with works from the late UT art professor.
Mount Bonnell -- a beautiful overlook in the center of town.
Music
- The main attraction (and where the largest throngs of college students are milling around) is
Sixth Street - The
Cactus Café is a great folk venue. - The
Eggmen are a fun local Beatles cover band.
Miscellaneous
- The
Arboretum Swing-dancing enthusiasts should check out
The Austin Swing Syndicate, which has lots of information about what's going on around Austin, lindy-wise.
