Bob's Improv Class:

Goals

  1. Help Us Cheat.

    • "Fake it 'til you make it" -- sometimes it's good to do things with training wheels for a while.
    • Develop stock material.

      • So, for example, we have good characters to fall back on when we're working (instead) on objective.
  2. Make the Troupe Better.

    • Focus on weakness of troupe/performances, not (necessarily) individuals. 1?
    • Create more/better teachers 2?
    • Develop group cohesion
    • Teach material that complements Johnstone.
    • Show alternatives to Johnstone's emphasis and techniques.
  3. Make Improv Better.

    • Advance the state of the art by teaching something that isn't already in a book we have.
    • Find new ways to look at improv, teach improv, and do improv.

Footnotes

1? Improvisors that get too introspective fall into a death spiral of "...I'm worrying about sucking so I'll analyze my performance and focus intensely and try hard to do better but I can't because I'm worrying about sucking..." and then their heads explode.

2? Meaning, make Bob a better teacher and pad Bob's resume'. :)
