"A Fine Day in Austinville"
Act Two
Introduction
"Act Two" means our second batch of scripts to be shot for Sketchville -- presumably in another marathon shooting weekend.
Timetable
- April 7th: Work out what the incident should be.
- April 14th: Have hand-wavey plans for what sketches should go in Act Two.
- May 1st: Have all sketches written for Act Two.
Question for the crew: does this work for y'all? Should we set a quicker schedule?
What Should Happen in Act Two?
- According to the big picture, Act Two is where we create 'gaps' -- we take the characters into situations radically different from what we saw in Act One, and force the audience to try to reconcile the two.
- We should touch on each of the main characters.
- We should include a couple of ancillary sketches that follow secondary characters or pay off references planted in Act One.
- If we hint the Incident here, we should do it as lightly and ambiguously as possible.
- Not to put too much pressure on us, but let's remember that the individual scenes should be funny as hell and should work dramatically.
Question for the crew: surely this can't be the most efficient solution, shooting-wise -- forcing us to visit every character in every act. But yet the audience will want to visit each of the protagonists on a regular basis. Would it be better for us to give you complete storylines? Would you rather have (say) a batch of twelve sketches, to (try to) shoot in four days?
Scenes for Act Two
We should expect to spend some time haggling over this. Ideally, we'll have a few ideas for each slot, pick the most promising one, and run with it.
